Yerington Rotary's Student of the Month program has been active since the 1990's.  Originally involving only Yerington High School (YHS) students, it was recently expanded to include students from the local Right of Passage school (ROP).  The purpose of the program is to honor students who "deserve to be recognized" for their performance in class.  The students are selected by school faculty and while academic performance is considered, quite often the students are selected for their effort and work ethics rather than just for high grade achievement.  At YHS two or three academic departments are assigned to select students for honoring each month.  In the course of the full year all departments have a chance to honor students in their department.  Students in all four classes (Freshman through Senior) are eligible for selection.  At ROP the process includes the entire student body being eligible each month.

All students selected are invited to attend (with their parents) a Yerington Rotary Club dinner meeting where they are introduced and their reasons for selection described by the teachers.  They are also presented with a certificate and given a small monetary award.  In addition, an article and photo with names and teacher comments about the students is submitted to the local newspaper.
